Trent University to Host 32nd Southwestern Ontario Undergraduate Student Chemistry Conference: March 20 Eight Trent University students to be among delegates Chemistry students from across southwestern Ontario will showcase their research findings at Trent University as it hosts the 32nd Southwestern Ontario Undergraduate Student Chemistry Conference (SOUSCC) on Saturday, March 20. The conference provides an opportunity for close to 80 undergraduate students to present their leading honours research work to fellow students, faculty members and local industry representatives. Trent University has a long history of attending the conference and faired extremely well at last year's event, earning three of 20 awards. Eight Trent students will be among this year's presenters. Students participate in one of five divisions including organic and polymer chemistry, inorganic and materials chemistry, biochemistry, analytical/environmental chemistry and physical/theoretical chemistry. Participants can earn first, second and third place as well as honourable mention awards. Each student presentation is 15 minutes in length and is followed by a question and answer session. "The conference is an opportunity for these students to present their research findings to a wider audience," says Dr. Andrew Vreugdenhil, Trent Chemistry professor and conference organizer. "A lot of effort is put into this research work and it's important that it receives the recognition it deserves." The day will wrap up with an awards banquet. This year's conference is sponsored by Trent University and the Canadian Institute for Chemistry. Industrial sponsors for the event include R&R Labs, SGS Lakefield Research, Brantford Chemical, Bruker Canada, Varian, Merck Frost and Prospect Scientific. Posted March 19, 2004 |
