Gearing up for 2003-04
Double cohort will impact numbers at upcoming Universities Fair
Approximately
60,000 people are expected to attend the annual Ontario Universities Fair
this year, which will take place September 27 29 at the Metro Toronto
Convention Centre.
"Attendance has been growing every year. Last year the total attendance
was just under 50,000 people," says Trent University Liaison Officer
Krista Effer. She adds that this is the sixth year for the huge event,
which features the representation of all Ontario universities. Information
is largely targeted to high school students in the process of choosing
which universities they would like to attend, although professional associations
and financial institutions are also on hand to provide more general information.
"The impact of the fair is huge. For a lot of people it is the connection
that brings them to campus for a tour, or to an information session at
their school which, in turn, brings them to campus," explains Krista,
who co-ordinates staff for the event. To keep the booth adequately staffed
approximately 40 people are needed for each day of the three-day fair.
Volunteers are still needed and any students, staff, faculty or alumni
who would like to attend the event would be much appreciated.
Increased
attendance at this years fair may be a factor of the double cohort
of students that will continue to enter Ontario universities next fall.
At Trent there have been several measures put in place to address this
issue, including the hiring of additional faculty; an increase in scholarship,
bursary and award dollars; a renovation of existing science facility space
and construction of a brand-new facility; construction of an Integrated
College incorporating a 250 bed residence and a First Peoples House
of Learning building; the construction of a new residential college; and
a policy that will see equal consideration given to both OAC and New Curriculum
applicants. For more information on the new buildings and development,
