Trent University Awards its Most Prestigious Scholarship to PCVS Student |

Local high school student receives Champlain Scholarship and $20,500
Trent University Registrar Susan Salusbury surprised PCVS student Matt Whitfield with the presentation of the Champlain Scholarship, valued at $20,500 over four years, yesterday at the school. Mr. Whitfield accepted the scholarship and hence, Trent's offer of admission, without hesitation. PCVS Principal Anita Simpson and Trent University Admission and Liaison Officer Spencer Harrison were on hand to congratulate an emotional Mr. Whitfield. Following the presentation, Ms. Simpson announced Mr. Whitfield's accomplishment to the entire school over the loudspeaker. Applause and cheering from Mr. Whitfield's fellow students could be heard in the hallways. Champlain Scholarships are awarded to students entering their first year of study at Trent, and recognize exceptionally high academic achievement and promise. Two scholarships are awarded yearly. This year, the value of the scholarship has been raised from $17,500 to recognize the increasingly exceptional calibre of student applicants. "It was indeed a pleasure to award the Champlain Scholarship to Mr. Whitfield. He is an extraordinary young individual and we are extremely pleased to welcome him to Trent," said Ms. Salusbury. "Mr. Whitfield is not only outstanding in his academic achievement, but in his extra-curricular accomplishments, his array of interests and aspirations for the future." The Champlain Scholarship was also awarded last year to a local high school student, St. Peter's Secondary School graduate Danica Hogan. As well, Edward Stokan from Kenner Collegiate and Katharine Rogers from Lakefield College School received Special Admission Scholarships valued at $11,000 each over four years. "We're delighted that Matt has been awarded the Champlain Scholarship. What a rare honour and privilege," said Ms. Simpson. "We're truly happy for him. It was particularly moving to see the impact this great news had on this deserving young man. Trent's personal visit to PCVS to share the good news with Matt and our school community was especially moving and greatly appreciated," she added.
