Trent University is pleased to announced the Sixteenth Annual Margaret Laurence Lecture will take place on Thursday, October 21, 2004 at 8 p.m. in the Champlain College Lecture Hall (CC S307).
Award-winning author of 28 books, Budge Wilson will revisit the life and work of Ms. Laurence in "Margaret: Darkness and Light". Ms. Wilson writes children's, adolescent and adult fiction, and was recently named a Member of the Order of Canada. She was a close friend to Ms. Laurence.
Ms. Wilson will reflect on a re-reading of Ms. Laurence's work, her memories of the friendship they shared, and what Ms. Laurence's work tells us about this important figure in Trent University's history.
"It seems fitting in Trent's 40th anniversary year that we have the opportunity to hear from someone who was a close personal friend of Margaret Laurence," says Professor Julia Harrison, chair of Trent's Women Studies program. "As an established author, Laurence encouraged and supported Wilson in the early stages of her writing career, a career which later blossomed to position her as one of Canada's best known authors."
A reception will follow in the Senior Common Room of Champlain College. All are welcome and there is no charge for admission.
The annual Margaret Laurence Lecture honours Trent's fourth chancellor, and acknowledges her contributions to literature, feminism, ecology, and the peace movement. Past lecturers include Ursula Franklin, Mary Walsh, Stevie Cameron, Shirley Douglas, June Callwood, Nourbese Philip and Naomi Klein.
Financial support for the 2004 lecture is provided by the Women's Studies Program, the Margaret Laurence Lecture Fund and the Canadian Studies Directorate, Heritage Canada.
