It’s Introductory Seminar Week (ISW), the week when first-year students at Trent get a taste of life at the University. At Trent, every student is associated with a college community as well, so ISW will get you involved in college life from day one.
This year, a series of fabulous events is planned – and a brand new tradition has been added: The ISW Cup. So join in!
This trophy will be awarded at Shinerama on the morning of Saturday, September 11 to the most enthusiastic College. Inserted in New Student Handbooks are perforated tickets for each university-wide event. Students should check the appropriate box for their College and hand tickets in to the TCSA staff member at the entrance of the corresponding event. In addition, College winners of the cheer competitions and the Great Race will get an extra boost towards the Cup. The College with the best participation rate combined with the bonus points from the Great Race will win the cup!
Scores will be adjusted to reflect the total number of students at each College.
Formula for the Cup:
College Cup Ratio = Total Tickets Collected / Total Students
+ 0.5 (Winner of the Great Race)
+ 0.25 (Winner of College Cheer)
+ 0.25 (Winner of University Cheer)
Tuesday 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Athletics Complex Gym
Single and Sexy is a play produced entirely by students for students. In a hilarious and realistic manner, the play explores the many issues facing students who are making the transition to university life. On Tuesday afternoon, each College will split their entire group of new students in two and either attend the play in the gym or go to the athletic field for Most Extreme Integration Challenge.
Tuesday, 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Athletics Field
This activity will get you moving and have you mixing and mingling with students from all the colleges. Be sure to attend, as tickets for ISW Cup points will be collected at this event, too.
Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
At your College!
On Wednesday morning, new students will be introduced to the academic side of college life. The College Carousel will give you an opportunity to meet your College Master or Principal, College Assistant, Cabinet President, and College Don – and hear about some of the traditions and other unique aspects of your new community. After the introduction to your College, your Senior Tutor will go over some of Trent's academic policies. During another component of the College Carousel, you’ll have the opportunity to discuss, in small groups, your academic expectations with a professor from your college.
Wednesday - BBQ 5 p.m. / Concert 7 p.m.
Bata Library Podium
Introfest is the first concert of the school year! A BBQ will begin at 5 p.m. on the podium Bata Library Podium and the concert begins at 7 p.m. Be sure to purchase your food tickets for the BBQ beforehand.
Thursday - 9am to 9:50 a.m., 10 a.m. - 10:50 a.m., and 11a.m. to 11:50 a.m.
Symons Campus
New students will have the opportunity to attend three of seven sessions. Topics will cover such areas as Careers and Part-Time Jobs, Athletics, and Academics. Session descriptions, locations, and sign up sheets are available at your college. Students will have an ISW Cup ticket for each of the three University Transitions sessions.
Thursday – 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Traill College Lawn
The Traill Carnival tradition continues! On Thursday afternoon, you’ll have the opportunity to dunk your favourite (or least favourite) ISW Staff, eat cotton candy, and take part in other carnival festivities. New this year is the "Stuff the Saturn" event. Representatives from Saturn will be bringing a car which each College will have a chance to fill with themselves. The College with the most new students in the car wins! Saturn has made a generous donation to Introfest.
During the week signup sheets will be circulated for teams of up to 30 from each College, so be sure to get involved.
Friday – 1 p.m.
Bata Library
The Great Race has been transformed into a campus-wide relay starting at Bata Library and visiting all Symons Campus Colleges. At each College, event stations will be set up. Once each College is finished its event, a runner will continue to the next College. Students who are not directly in the race will cheer on their teams from the Bata Library Podium. Each College will have a separate section, and a sound system will inform everyone of the status of the race.
The Great Race winners will receive a 0.5 point bonus to their ISW Cup ratio score, and winners of each cheer competition will receive a 0.25 bonus per victory.
Saturday – 8 a.m.
Traill College
Shinerama's back! Trent students are aiming to raise $23,000 this year towards a national goal of $1 million for Cystic Fibrosis Research. Shinerama is the largest fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis Research in Canada and your participation can only make it bigger and better. Buses will leave from the Gzowski College loop and Bata Library continuously from 7:30am to 9:00am. Breakfast will be served from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. so be sure to get there early! In addition, the ISW Cup will be presented at the Opening Ceremonies of Shinerama.
For more information about these and other ISW events, talk to your college don or visit the Office of Student Affairs in Blackburn Hall.
