Trent Student One of 30 Canadians to Receive International Learning Grant

It's important to Trent University student Richard Webster to know he's studying at an ethical institution. That's one of the reasons he chose to spend his third year of study at Oxford Brookes in the United Kingdom.

This politics and International Political Economy student will study international relations at Oxford Brookes through the Trent International Study and Exchange Program (TISEP) and Mr. Webster has recently learned his studies will be supported by a Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) learning grant of $2,500.

The CBIE announced on August 25 the winners of its 2004 competition for International Learning Grants. Mr. Webster was among the 30 young Canadians representing 20 different institutions who were awarded grants. With over 350 applications from across Canada, the selection process is extremely competitive. Students must demonstrate their commitment to international learning not only through scholastic achievement but also by their volunteer work and leadership activities.

CBIE established the International Learning Grants in 2000 to respond to booming interest in study abroad by Canadian youth. CBIE seeks to provide opportunities for Canadian learners to develop a global mindset and for this, Mr. Webster is extremely grateful.

"With what I'm studying, I think it's really important for me, personally, to expand my mind and my perspective," says Mr. Webster, who adds he comes from a town of 500.

Having always wanted to study abroad, Mr. Webster can't wait for the fall and the beginning of a new adventure. He said he chose England as a destination because it's a commonwealth country. The courses Mr. Webster is planning to take overseas, he says will complement his studies here and include international human rights law and conflict resolution. After graduation, he hopes to pursue a career in foreign affairs with the Canadian government.

In the meantime however, he's looking forward to meeting other international students and Oxford Brookes professors. He visited the university during last year's reading break and came away with a positive feeling. He says there are many similarities between Oxford Brookes and Trent - among them, environmental awareness and ethics.

"This is the opportunity of a lifetime," Mr. Webster says.

Mr. Webster will start classes in England on September 17 and finish in May. During that time, he hopes to visit friends who are also on exchange in the United Kingdom, and travel to "as much of Europe as possible".

In his application to TISEP, Mr. Webster wrote, "I want to see the world, hear the world, feel the world and taste the world. I want to not only be a Canadian citizen, but a global citizen as well."
