In more ways than one, Trent University celebrated a first-class convocation. For the first time, Trent hosted three convocation ceremonies and conferred degrees upon education and nursing graduates. It also conferred degrees upon a record 1,285 Trent University undergraduate and graduate students and six distinguished Canadians.

Among the students who received their degrees at convocation ceremonies May 27 and 28, were the first graduates from the School of Education and Professional Learning and the Trent-Fleming Nursing Program. The graduates from these programs and increases in enrolment prompted the addition of a third convocation ceremony for the first time this year.

Ceremonies took place on May 27 at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. for all undergraduate arts and science degrees and diplomas, divided by college groups; and on Friday, May 28 at 10 a.m. for graduate students, business, education and nursing students. The ceremonies were held on the podium of the Bata Library at the Symons Campus.

Degrees were conferred upon 1,251 undergraduate and 34 graduate students, and six undergraduate students received diplomas.

Dr. Roberta Bondar, Trent University's ninth chancellor, presided over her second convocation; she was installed as chancellor at last year's convocation ceremonies.

Trent University granted 32 master's degrees - 14 in the arts and 18 in the sciences - and two PhDs. It conferred honours bachelor degrees on 461 arts and 244 science graduands, and general bachelor degrees on 262 arts and 78 science students. One hundred and thirteen students received Bachelor of Education Degrees, 47 students received Bachelor of Business Administration Degrees and 46 students received Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degrees.

Statistics from the Office of the Registrar show that 69% of graduates are female, while 31% are male. Students under the age of 23 comprise 52% of the graduating class; 34% of graduating students are between the ages of 24 and 30, reflecting the graduates of the Education and compressed Nursing program.
