Welcome to Trent and Introductory Seminar Week!

Click here for photos of Clubs and Groups Day, Wednesday, September 3

Welcome to Trent! We’re thrilled to have you here; it’s going to be a busy week, what with all those barbecues, bonfires and bonzai games, concerts, contests and carnivals planned…

Introductory Seminar Week, well known as ISW, is an opportunity for you to learn about the campus, the city and most importantly, your college community. The week is jam-packed with a wide array of activities that will inspire lifelong friendships and fun. All first-year students are encouraged to take part.

On the academic front, you will have an opportunity to attend a variety of introductory seminars, presented by professors within each academic department and program. This will provide you with a preview of first-year courses and allow you to finalize your course selection.

"We have a wonderful staff who will help the new students make the transition to university life," says Piet Funnekotter, ISW co-ordinator. "Get involved in as much as you can, meet as many people as you can and of course, check out the academic seminars!"

The following is an overview of the major events planned for ISW - there are many more. For further information, see your Introductory Seminar Week 2003 Get Ready… handbook, or contact your college’s ISW leaders.

Tuesday, September 2 - Thursday, September 4
Attend introductory seminars of the first year courses that are being offered in the upcoming academic year. These introductory seminars are presented by the professors of each of Trent’s academic programs and departments, and allow you to preview a variety of courses. After attending these seminars and meeting with your Academic Advisor, you will have the opportunity to adjust and/or confirm the course selections that you had initially made during your summer registration appointment.

Prior to Friday, September 5
Finalize your course selections in consultation with your Academic Advisor.

Wednesday, September 3 - Clubs and Groups Day
10 a.m. - 3 p.m. - Bata Library podium
Follow your forte to a Trent club or group! If you don’t sing anywhere but in the shower, you’re not interested in debate and you don’t believe there’s anything "great" about the outdoors, you can still get involved this fall. With more than 50 clubs and groups in existence, there’s sure to be something for everyone.
To find out for yourself, come to ISW’s Clubs and Groups Day outside the Bata Library. There, Trent clubs and groups will showcase themselves, looking to take-on first-year students.
Clubs and Groups Day is a great way to find out what’s out there and to get involved from the get-go. There’s something for everyone. However, if your club-of-choice doesn’t happen to exist, you can start it up. Information on how to start a new club or group will also be available.

Wednesday, September 3 - University-Wide BBQ
5 p.m. - BBQ, 7 p.m. - music - Bata Library podium (Rain plan in effect: BBQ at Lady Eaton College, Music in Champlain College Great Hall)
Come on out for good food…good times…good music! Tickets can be purchased at your college dining hall starting Labour Day Monday or you can purchase your ticket at the event. College dining halls will not be open during the BBQ.

Thursday, September 4 - The Great Race
5 p.m. - the athletic field outside the Athletic Complex
Participate in a time-honoured tradition at Trent as colleges compete for The Grail. The Great Race is a relay of games and events that require little athletic ability but need enthusiasm and college participation! Everyone is welcome to sign up for events with your ISW leaders. Sponsored by the Trent Central Student Association.

Friday, September 5 - The Trent Carnival
3 - 5 p.m. - Traill College
Come downtown to the Trent Carnival that is hosted by Traill College. It is a great tradition where all colleges can participate in games together. There is also a dunk tank and other activities. Some activities may cost $0.50 - $2.00. Any funds raised at the carnival will be donated to a local charity.

Saturday, September 6 - Shinerama
As the largest fundraiser for students in post-secondary education, Shinerama is a great way to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis research. This year Shinerama will be held on September 6, ending yet another great ISW. This amazing event begins with breakfast and a pep rally, followed by a fun-filled day of shining, washing and cheering! The Shinerama bash held on the Saturday night celebrates the hard work of all those involved in Shinerama and intro week. In addition to this sensational day, other Shinerama events will take place over the week, such as the cheering competition.

Upper Year Registration

The check-in for upper year students for Otonabee College is on Sunday, September 7, 2003 in the college office.

Catharine Parr Traill, Champlain and Lady Eaton students can check in during the week of September 8 through 12 in their college offices. Peter Robinson upper year students can check in at Gzowski College during that same week.
