Ashley Fellow Appointed for 2003/04
Dr.
Carlos Escudé has been appointed as Trent University’s Ashley
Fellow for 2003/04.
Nominated by the History Department, Dr. Escudé is identified as "likely the most distinguished political theorist in Latin America." His work combines political theory, historical analysis, and political economy. A full professor at the Universidad di Tella in Buenos Aires, Dr. Escudé earned his Ph.D. in Politics at Yale University and has taught at a variety of other universities including Harvard and the University of North Carolina. He is the co-director and principal author of a recent 14-volume history of Argentine foreign relations, and is a Senior Tenured Researcher at the Argentine National Research Council. In addition, Dr. Escudé has published 12 books, and he has held a Guggenheim Fellowship. He also served as Foreign Minister for the government of Argentina in 1991-92.
Dr. Escudé’s recent work as an expert/consultant has resulted in projects with the United Nations Development Program, the World Bank’s Latin American and Caribbean Division, Royal Dutch Shell and the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in the Argentine Republic.
A long-time fellow of St. Anthony's College, Oxford, Dr. Escudé is familiar with the college system and understands its role in the life of a university.
Dr. Escudé is enthusiastic about coming to Trent as an Ashley Fellow. He is willing to present a series of seminars on current problems in Argentine/Latin American politics, Latin American political economies, Latin American popular culture and current problems in globalization and terror. As well, he would be pleased to present some aspects of his multi-media globalization course to undergraduates at Trent, and is interested in organizing a conference at Trent on human rights and the place of the university in 21st-century Latin America.
