New Emphasis Program in Medieval and Renaissance Studies Launched at Trent University

Students at Trent University interested in the Medieval and Renaissance periods will be able to access a new emphasis program in September 2003.

Called the "Medieval and Renaissance Emphasis Program", this is a brand new option that allows undergraduate students to focus their studies on a particular period of human history. Students interested in literature, history and classics will have a natural affinity for this type of program, but any student enrolled in the honours Bachelor of Arts program can apply. Latin 200 is a core course, along with six related courses that can be chosen from an extensive list. Upon graduation, a participating student’s transcript will indicate achievement of a degree and applicable major(s), "with an Emphasis in Medieval and Renaissance Studies."

"This program has been a dream of mine for a long time," says Professor Sarah Keefer, of the English Literature Department.

Professor Keefer worked with Professor Ivana Elbl, of the History Department, to found the program, and several other faculty members have also been involved.

"We will move towards establishing a centre of Medieval and Renaissance Studies," continues Prof. Keefer. "Already, we’re planning a lecture series for next year and want to introduce things like film afternoons and speakers."

Information about the new emphasis program can be found at www.trentu.ca/mars. Professors Keefer and Elbl would also be pleased to answer specific questions.
