The Trent-Fleming School of Nursing brought together an impressive group of dedicated students, parents and community partners for their annual awards ceremony on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 in the Lady Eaton College Pit. The first recipient of the new Elizabeth Collins Nursing Leadership Prize was also announced and presented by Elizabeth Collins herself.

Dr. Cindy Gilmer emceed the collegial event and welcomed faculty, students and community to the cozy lounge. For the keynote address, Professor Emeritus Dr. Janet Rush gave an impassioned speech about the importance of academic preparation for the discipline of nursing and noted that Trent University had much to celebrate with its success as a Best Practice Spotlight Organization of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario.

And the Award Winners Are:

• Preceptor Recognition Award Jessica Wannan, PRHC emerg, Presented by Leslie Grightmire
  Recognizing a preceptor who has demonstrated leadership in nursing education, student centred learning and support and advocacy for supportive organizational policies.
  
  
• The Dean’s Award for Excellence in Nursing Scholarship Susan Robinson – George Brown site, Kirsten Woodend
  Recognizing a faculty member who has made an outstanding contribution in the domains of scholarship, (application, discovery, integration and teaching), through ongoing development of students and faculty.
  
  
• RNAO Best Practice Guideline Student Champion Emily Marek, Presented by Andrea Mowry
  Recognizing a student who demonstrates leadership in dissemination of the RNAO BPGs, shows leadership in knowledge transfer and utilization in clinical practice among peers, and has co-curricular credits for being a BPG Champion.
  
  
• RNAO Best Practice Guideline Faculty Champion Andrea Mowry, Presented by Patti Tracey
  Recognizing Trent/Fleming School of Nursing faculty who have demonstrated excellence in championing the integration and adoption of nursing best practices into the curriculum.
  
  
• Janet Bews Scholarship in Alzheimer Disease and Related Dementias ($4000) Hayley Graham, Presented by Dorothy Owens
  Established by the Alzheimer Society of Peterborough and Area in memory of Professor Janet P. Bews, a member of the Trent Classics department from 1966 -1999 and a strong advocate for the Alzheimer Society.
  
  
• Central East Community Care Access Centre Prize ($1000) Carly Whitmore, Presented by Peggy Watton
  For demonstrating an active record of and/or ongoing commitment to volunteer or work experience in a variety of community-based settings
  
  
• Parkinson’s Society Dr. Ted Cragg Award ($1000) Sarah Dykeman, Presented by Ruth Stedall & Cheryl Rice
  Established by the family Of Dr. T Cragg with the Parkinson’s Society in recognition of his contribution to the community.
  
  
• Nicolls/Civic Alumnae Prize ($500) Kristy Wooton, Presented by Brenda Angione, President of the Nicoll’s /Civic Alumnae
  For providing an example of professional responsibility and accountablilty, knowledge-based practice, application of knowledge, ethical practice and service to the public
  
  
• Elizabeth Collins Leadership Prize ($100) Scott Wight, Presented by Elizabeth Collins
  Established by the family of Elizabeth Collins, to honour the many years that she demonstrated excellence in nursing leadership in both the hospital and public health sectors.
  
  
• Mary Ann Murphy Memorial Award ($500) Anna Rutkowski, Presented by Joanne Devlin & Eileen Heine
  In keeping with the values and mission of Mary Anne Murphy and the Health Ministry, the recipient will have demonstrated compassion in the clinical setting and a special interest in health care ethics.

Bursaries

• Dr. Jennifer Ingram Award
  Preference given to students exhibiting an interest in community development and/or the health of seniors.
  
  
• Phyllis Morton Memorial Bursary
  Established in memory of Phyllis (Kearn) Morton by her loving family, who were the centre of her life. 
  
  
• School of Nursing Bursary
  Established by faculty, staff and friends of the School of Nursing to assist a student who is currently working part-time.
  
  
• Peter Thomas Walker (R.N.) Bursary
  Established in 2006 by his family and friends.  Dedicated to the loving memory of Nurse Peter Thomas Walker 1973, Occupational Health and Safety Inspector 1987-2005 and Occupational Health and Safety Officer Provincial Offence Officer 2005.
  
  
• Marg Tunney Memorial Bursary
  Established by family, friends and the Sister of St. Joseph to honour Marg Tunney, distinguished nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital, member of Sacred Heart Church and the Catholic Women’s League and devoted volunteer for St. Vincent de Paul, Jamaican Self Help, Marycrest and the Liberal Associations of Peterborough.
  
  
• CIBC Nursing Awards
  CIBC was recognized for establishing its Nursing Awards. These awards represent Trent's largest single program awards which were granted this year to 19 inaugural recipients. The awards come with a monetary value of up to $2500. CIBC representative, Bernadette McCabe, had the opportunity to meet prior to the awards ceremony, with two of the award recipients.
