10:00 AM - 11:50 AM
Join Kate Hodge, GIS and Data Support Specialist, in celebrating GIS Day with a hands-on introduction to cartography and spatial data visualization using ArcGIS Pro. As the final workshop in the series, participants will build on the same dataset used in previous sessions to create professional-quality static maps and explore the advantages of desktop GIS for analysis and cartographic production.
While ArcGIS Online is ideal for creating and sharing interactive maps, ArcGIS Pro provides greater control over map design, data visualization, and analytical workflows. Participants will learn how to prepare data, apply cartographic design principles, symbolize information effectively, and create publication-ready maps.
By the end of the workshop, participants will have created a polished map layout and gained practical skills for producing maps for research projects, course assignments, reports, posters, and presentations.
Participants will learn how to:
- Import and organize spatial data within ArcGIS Pro
- Prepare and assess datasets for mapping projects
- Explore and visualize spatial data using ArcGIS Pro
- Apply core cartographic design principles
- Classify and symbolize data to reveal spatial patterns
- Create effective labels and annotations
- Design professional map layouts using essential map elements
- Export publication-quality maps for print and digital formats
- Understand the strengths of desktop GIS for analysis and cartographic production
Prerequisites: No prior GIS or cartography experience is required. Participants who have attended the earlier workshops will benefit from working with a familiar dataset and understanding how ArcGIS Pro complements web mapping workflows.
