Trent University Mourns the Passing of Distinguished Alumnus John Horgan ’79
John Horgan, a 2024 TUAA Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, remembered as longtime B.C. premier, leader of B.C. NDP, and Canadian ambassador to Germany
The University community is saddened to learn of the passing of John Horgan ‘79 (Peter Robinson College), best known as the former B.C. Premier (2017 to 2022) who became a national champion for public healthcare reform and guided the province through the COVID-19 pandemic, floods, and wildfires.
Horgan, a recipient of the 2024 Trent University Alumni Association (TUAA) Alumni Award Distinguished Alumni Award, [RD1] was also former leader of the B.C. NDP and most recently served as Canada’s ambassador to Germany.
When he left public office, Horgan was the first two-term and longest serving NDP Premier in the history of the province. From his humble origins in a working-class neighbourhood, to his life as a Trent student, and throughout his outstanding public service and political career, Horgan became a proven leader on the local, provincial, national, and now, international stage.
Horgan dedicated his public life to improving the lives of his fellow citizens, and his government was committed to social justice and economic equality including introducing historic legislation on Indigenous rights and climate action.
His leadership style has been described as down-to-earth, charismatic, and inspirational.
The University extends heartfelt condolences to Horgan’s family, including his wife Ellie Horgan ’79 (Peter Robinson College) and sons Nate and Evan, and all who were fortunate enough to know him.
