Virtual book launch October 23, 2024 at 11:00 am EST in celebration of the publication Re-Search Methods in Social Work
Given that social work is a profession that draws on multiple disciplines including but not limited to business, education, nursing, psychology, sociology, Indigenous studies, gender and social justice, and child and youth studies, this textbook will be relevant for anyone conducting re-search that spans more than one worldview. In this virtual book launch, the authors will explain aspects of the book Re-search Methods in Social Work: Linking Ways of Knowing to Knowledge Creation that exemplify the critical theory, de-colonizing, and transformative lens with which the book was written. In the context of Turtle Island/Kanata/Canada, topics to be discussed at the book launch include the meaning and importance of the hyphen in the term “re-search” that creates a pause in the word to reflect on the history of dominant euro-western research and its impact on Indigenous and other marginalized populations. The authors also explain how the book models the concept of ethical space as introduced to re-search methods by Ermine (1995): “a space that brings together multiple ways of knowing from a place of respect, responsibility, inclusion, and relationality—no one worldview dominates or overshadows the others.” This includes concepts such as how language reflects one's worldview and the importance of being aware of the underlying worldview (Indigenous, [post]positivist, interpretivist/constructivist, transformative/critical theory) when deciding on and engaging in a broad range of re-search methods. Participants will also learn about the instructor resources that are available to support instructors using the textbook in their classrooms.
