Trent University Saddened to Learn of the Passing of Alumnus Stuart Butts ’65
Stuart Butts was a distinguished entrepreneur who received the Spirit of Trent Award and was a strong supporter of Trent University
The Trent community is saddened to learn of the passing of Stuart Butts ‘65 (Champlain College) - a past recipient of the Spirit of Trent Award, member of Trent’s 50th anniversary committee, and esteemed member of the Philanthropic Advisory Council.
As a Trent student in the 1960s, Stuart developed his leadership skills as editor of Sword, president of Champlain College council, and founder of The Commoner pub. He went on to a distinguished career as a lawyer and entrepreneur, later reconnecting with his alma mater including serving as the Champlain College alumni in residence and supporting president Tom Symons’ 90th birthday celebrations.
Stuart was known for his lifelong passion for learning, collaboration, and support of important issues including climate change, sustainability, and food security. He was also known as a bon vivant who naturally connected with others and lived by the motto ‘Carpe Diem’. In fact, Stuart received his Spirit of Trent Award during the University’s Ideas that Change the World symposium that celebrated sustainability and joyful living.
Below is an excerpt from his obituary:
“A lifelong Epicurean, Stu believed in living for the moment, being good company, and always showing consideration for others. His bonhomie came naturally to him. Always curious, always welcoming, always engaged, he made connections seemingly effortlessly and worked to keep the friends he made, drawing them together to sow new friendships.”
Stuart was an important part of the Trent Alumni Family.
“Stu was kind, smart, funny, well-informed, and always quick to share his ideas, talents, and insights,” said Sherry Booth, associate vice-president Philanthropy & Alumni Engagement. “His view of being an Epicurean meant never wanting too much fame or power or money, but rather always being good company. He was that.”
A celebration of life is to be held at The Redwood Theatre, 1300 Gerrard Street East, Toronto, on Thursday, November 28 starting at 6:00 p.m.
