Youth Speaker Inspires Trent Durham Students Towards Personal Growth
Author and keynote speaker Sam Demma encouraged new students to prioritize personal well-being and pursue passions
Keynote speaker and best-selling author Sam Demma inspired Trent University Durham Greater Toronto Area students during Orientation Week with a motivational session aimed at empowering students as they embark on their university journey.
The event, spearheaded by the Trent University Durham Student Life team, engaged students by blending humour, personal stories, and powerful insights into leadership, mental health, and personal growth tips. Sam’s signature style of weaving in light-hearted moments with actionable advice left a lasting impression on the students who attended as part of Campus Cup activities.
"I met Sam at orientation and immediately sensed his passion for spreading positivity and encouraging students to reach their full potential through his energetic personality and enthusiastic laughter,” said Taylor Uroda, student staff member with the Student Life team and a fourth-year Social Work student.
Supporting Mental Health and Well-Being at Trent
Sam’s keynote address aligns with Trent Durham GTA’s goal of promoting mental health awareness and support on campus. Sam emphasized the importance of creating a positive and supportive environment where students feel comfortable seeking help and accessing mental health resources.
One of the highlights of the session was Sam’s message about the importance of letting go of limiting beliefs — a central theme of his best-selling book, Empty Your Backpack. By encouraging students to release the mental weight of self-doubt and the expectations of others, Sam empowered students to pursue their passions with confidence and clarity.
“Sam's message of giving yourself grace along your journey and remembering everyone carries an invisible backpack was meaningful and particularly inspiring as we welcomed our new students. The seamless nature of Sam's keynote and his humour made orientation one to remember,” said Taylor.
Sam Demma’s keynote is a reflection of Trent Durham’s commitment to fostering a supportive environment for all students and ensuring students feel empowered to take charge of their mental health and seek community and connection on campus.
