Elevating Nonprofit Leadership: New Micro-Credential Empowers Professionals for Success
Program to meet diverse goals with option to customize learning journey with flexible selection of 10 à la carte courses
Students, graduates, and nonprofit professionals can now elevate their impact within the nonprofit sector through the new Nonprofit Management Essentials (NME) micro-credential.
Created through the collective vision of Trent University and the Community Foundations of Kawartha Lakes and Greater Peterborough, the NME is a vital, affordable, and timely initiative designed to equip current and future professionals with the critical management skills needed to navigate the evolving complexities of the nonprofit sector.
The Ontario Nonprofit Network alone has 58,000 registered organizations, which employ nearly 850,000 individuals across the province. Trends over the last few years, including that demand for nonprofit services has increased 29% since 2020, highlight the opportunity and need for specialized training and strong business acumen.
“This program is an incredible opportunity for anyone looking to make a meaningful contribution to their community,” said Kevin Whitmore, director of Co-op, Careers, and Experiential Learning at Trent University. “The fundamental skills taught throughout this program will not only help industry leaders propel their organizations to new levels, but also equip those entering the nonprofit sector with the tools they need for success.”
Flexible and customizable learning journey
The NME program offers a suite of 10 courses, running monthly from September 26, 2024 through June 2025. Participants can tailor their learning experience to meet their specific interests and professional needs by earning course badges – on topics like financial administration, grant writing, and digital marketing – or enrolling in the entire program to earn the full micro-credential electronic certification.
This comprehensive program also includes Embracing Diversity: Creating Equitable Work Environments, a course designed to explore the foundational principles, theories, and practical strategies for fostering inclusive environments within organizations.
Laurie Dillon-Schalk, executive director of the Community Foundation of Kawartha Lakes, acknowledges the growing demand for professionals with both strong financial and operational management capabilities.
“There is a critical need to deepen our collective commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion within organizations,” said Dillon-Schalk. “By integrating EDI into our training programs alongside robust financial and management skills development, we can help break down systemic barriers while building a workforce that is both skilled and inclusive.”
