September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day dedicated to acknowledging the intergenerational impact of residential schools while honouring the process of reconciliation. This is a day for everyone to reflect on the history between First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples and settler Canadians and to further our understanding of the injustices of the last centuries.
We encourage all members of our community to take this day as an opportunity for self-reflection, learning, and dialogue about the ongoing journey toward reconciliation with Indigenous peoples in Canada. This day serves as a reminder of the lasting impact of residential schools and the need for truth, healing, and change. Let us use this occasion to deepen our understanding, foster empathy, and renew our dedication to the path of reconciliation.
To mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Trent University is hosting a number of in-person events to support learning and reflection while encouraging members of the Trent community to take action on reconciliation.
Events hosted on the Durham campus on Monday, September 30 are as follows:
- Community Reflection 11:30 a.m., Medicine Garden
- Open Sacred Fire 12 noon to 3:00 p.m. Tipi
- Medicine Garden Rock Painting 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., outside the Tipi behind Building A
- Paint your own rock to contribute to the new medicine garden on campus.
All members of the Trent community are welcome. Read Trent's Protocol Guidebook to learn how to respectfully engage in ceremony.
