Trent University Saddened to Learn of the Passing of Ph.D. Student Eric Samtleben
The Trent University community is saddened to learn of the passing of Eric Samtleben, a Trent alum and Ph.D. student studying health psychology.
Eric was a dedicated and passionate member of the Trent community. A proud graduate, he earned a Bachelor of Arts Honours and a Master of Science in Health Psychology at Trent, specializing in mental health in sports. At the time of his passing, he had started work on his Ph.D. in Psychology. His research as a Ph.D. student focused on mental health in sports and the psychological factors impacting health behaviours – specifically exercise adherence and performance – to determine how exercise can be used as a vehicle for self-development.
Eric was also a teaching assistant for Mathematics and an instructor for Trent’s Continuing Education program, teaching courses in Self-Regulation, Self-Actualization, and Well-Being.
During his time at Trent, Eric was active as a student-athlete and head coach of Excalibur cross country team. In 2022, he received the Coaches Award for his commitment to the pursuit of excellence, for himself and his team. Eric was known for his kindness, generosity, and the genuine care he showed for each athlete, his impact extended far beyond the track.
In honour of Eric, the flag atop Bata Library will be lowered to half-mast on the day of his Celebration of Life in September.
The University extends heartfelt sympathies to Eric’s family and friends, and to all who knew him at Trent University. We understand that this news will be challenging for many in the Trent community. Counselling and supports for students and employees are available.
