Learning Isn’t Linear: Mature Transfer Student Returns to University
Dayo Dixon joined Trent Durham’s Social Work program with the goal of advocating for racialized communities
After getting married, having kids, and entering the workforce, Dayo Dixon decided to return to university after 23 years to pursue Social Work at Trent University Durham GTA.
Dayo originally enrolled in a Child and Youth program at a different post-secondary institution directly after high school, but took a break to focus on her family. When making the decision to return to university, she chose Trent’s Social Work program to focus on social justice.
Dayo worried about feeling out of place being a mature student, but this changed once she started attending classes. She said, “the truth is, there are all walks of life at Trent and it’s a comfortable campus to be at.”
Now in her second year, Dayo has enjoyed connecting with various students throughout her studies and getting hands-on experience working as an Engagement and Registration Peer Leader at Trent Durham.
“It's a small campus... making it easier to connect and make friends,” she said.
For advice to transfer students, Dayo recommends connecting with an academic advisor and continuing to meet with them throughout your studies to ensure you’re on track. She also suggests taking advantage of the resources available, like Academic Skills; and getting to know your professors, who can often be a source of information and guidance throughout your time at Trent.
After graduation, Dayo hopes to obtain her master’s degree and enter a career in policy and advocacy for racialized groups.
