University Court Renamed to Tapscott-Lopes Court
Trent University marks decades of dedication from Dr. Don Tapscott ’66 and Dr. Ana Lopes ’18 (hon)
Recognizing two of its most dedicated champions, Trent University has renamed University Court to Tapscott-Lopes Court, honouring Dr. Don Tapscott ’66 (Champlain College) and Dr. Ana Lopes ’18 (hon). This naming commemorates their impact and support of the University and its students.
"Ana and I are deeply honoured," said Dr. Tapscott, reflecting on the emotional significance of the area where he spent time as both a student and chancellor. "The court holds countless memories for me, dating back to the 1960s when I was here as a student. My band used to perform here, and we used to just hang out and talk, enjoying the communal spirit of this space. As Chancellor, I presided over and spoke to countless convocations and as someone who has been to many universities around the world, I don’t believe there is a more beautiful setting to convocate. Ron Thom’s breathtaking architecture nestles this space on the Otonabee and as it’s said, a river runs through it – creating a perfect metaphor for the journey of the student experience.”
Dr. Tapscott is a renowned author, entrepreneur, and social innovator. His influence at Trent is profound, having chaired the "Beyond our Walls" campaign and served as the University’s first alumnus chancellor, a role in which he inspired thousands of graduates to live consequential lives and make a difference with the knowledge they’ve gained while at Trent. Dr. Tapscott is currently serving on the University’s Philanthropic Advisory Council.
Dr. Ana Lopes, who served two terms on the Trent Board of Governors, ending as vice chair, was integral to the establishment of Gzowski College and was honoured with the title of Governor Emerita. Recognized for her invaluable contributions, she was awarded honorary alumni status in 2018 and in 2022 she was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws by the University.
In 2004, they established The Tapscott-Lopes Business and Society Lecture, bringing prominent speakers to Trent University to address issues of values and ethics as they pertain to business and society. Past speakers include: CEO of Cherry Hill Records, Jim Griffin; world-renowned environmentalist, academic, and broadcaster, Dr. David Suzuki; and President and CEO of Maple Leaf Foods, Michael McCain. The pair are also Members of the Order of Canada, recognized for their philanthrophy, volunteerism, and leadership in business innovation.
“As thousands of graduates celebrate their convocation each year in the Tapscott-Lopes Court, I hope they take a moment to reflect on Don and Ana’s legacy and how it enhanced their Trent Experience,” said Julie Davis, vice president of external relations and development at Trent. “Their dedication and contributions to Trent exemplify the values we strive to instill in our graduates, and their story will continue to inspire future generations.”
Tapscott-Lopes Court, located between the Bata Library and the Faryon Bridge on the Symons Campus, is host to Trent University’s annual Peterborough convocation ceremonies, welcoming nearly 3000 graduates to the Trent University Alumni Association every year.
