On the Path to Medical School with $110,000 Scholarship
Medical Professional Stream student Alyssa Robinson ‘20 to start medical studies at St. George’s University School of Medicine this fall
Alyssa Robinson (Gzowski College) has always had the ambition to become a doctor. She found the right pathway to get her there through Trent’s Medical Professional Stream and its unique direct-entry opportunity to medical school at St. George’s University (SGU) School of Medicine.
Now, four years later, as she prepares to graduate from Trent with a degree in Biomedical Science through the Medical Professional Stream, her dream is now even closer to reality. And in recognition of her hard work and dedication, she is taking that next step with significant financial support – a $110,000 scholarship.
At SGU, Alyssa will pursue the Northumbria pathway, which provides students with an opportunity to study at Northumbria University in the UK during their first year, spend their second year at SGU, and then complete their third and fourth rotations in the US, UK, or Canada.
“I chose the Northumbria Pathway because of the diverse opportunities that come with doing your schooling and clinical rotations in different countries,” says Alyssa. “By experiencing such a wide range of environments and healthcare systems, I believe I’ll be better equipped as a healthcare provider in the future.”
Upon completing the program at SGU, Alyssa will apply to complete her residency either in Canada or the US, with the intention of working as a cardiologist. Through the Biomedical Sciences program, she’s currently completing an internship at Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC). She has had the opportunity to shadow an interventional cardiologist, pathologist, and pediatrician, and will shadow an interventional radiologist.
“As I get ready to graduate, it’s bittersweet. I’m excited for my next chapter but I’ll never forget my time at Trent. As someone who loves to learn, I appreciated the smaller class sizes where I had the opportunity to connect with my professors. I’ve enjoyed being an orientation leader on campus for two years, a student ambassador, and currently event and program assistant with Marsha Serville in the MPS Program.”
As part of her acceptance package, Alyssa will also be traveling to Northumbria with other Canadian students for an all-expenses paid trip to explore her new campus and all its amenities, and connect with other peers who will also be starting in August.
Applications to the Medical Professional Stream pathway remain open for fall 2024. Apply today.
