Lady Eaton College fellow was also a trailblazer in Trent’s Political Studies Department
The University community is saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Margaret Doxey, professor emerita in Trent’s Department of Political Studies.
Professor Doxey’s career at Trent spanned over 20 years. She began teaching at Trent in 1969 and played a key role in establishing the Department of Political Studies. Prof. Doxey became an associate professor in 1971, served as chair in 1975, and was appointed full professor in 1976.
An expert in international law, Prof. Doxey was the author of seven acclaimed and influential books, including Economic Sanctions and International Enforcement. She was also a renowned scholar of the Commonwealth and met King Charles, the late Queen, and other members of the royal family at various Commonwealth events.
Her obituary notes that “while her research made a foundational contribution to international relations and foreign policy, her greatest achievement, in her estimation, was her students.”
In honour of her contributions to Trent and beyond, the Margaret Doxey Scholarship in Political Studies was established in 2018. The scholarship is awarded to an upper-year student who has written the best paper on a topic that explores a political issue that has a significant international dimension. Donations to the scholarship can be made online.
The University extends heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of Dr. Margaret Doxey and to all who knew her at Trent.
