Trent Students and Professor Research the Effects of AI in the Workplace
Master of Management students at Trent University Durham publish research on the impact of generative AI on employees in a human resources journal
Trent University Master of Management students can add published researcher to their resume, now that their paper on the impact of generative artificial intelligence (AI) on employees was included in the Human Resources and Service Management journal.
Trent University Durham GTA professor, Dr. Amina Malik, read a student-submitted group paper for her Strategic Human Resource Management course and said it stood out to her, which is why she encouraged the students to pursue publishing their paper.
Professor Malik acted as the student’s supervisor and supported their research process. She was inspired by their initiative and passion for the project. “It’s a two-way street. Students need to show interest in their own career-development, and if they do, I will do what I can to help them.”
Through qualitative methods, the paper explored the effects generative AI has on employee well-being. The students, David Richard Lozie, Robina Omosa, Sara Hesami, Shenjuti Zaman, and Mahsa Kajbaf, interviewed three working professionals and analyzed their responses.
“Generative AI has both negative and positive effects on employee morale and productivity if not properly managed. Our findings revealed there was a positive impact of AI on work, particularly in terms of managing workload more efficiently and allowing more focus on significant tasks,” said Master’s student Robina Omosa.
Robina was thankful for Prof. Malik’s leadership and guidance throughout the process. “During the publication process, she was always available to offer support and encouragement. Her dedication ensured we had adequate networks, funds, and resources to get published. Her expertise and mentorship have been invaluable in shaping the direction of our research.”
She is planning to pursue her Ph.D. at Trent, and Prof. Malik will be supervising her.
David Richard Lozie, another Master’s student who worked on the paper, said he further developed his collaboration skills through the project. “It introduced me to a new dimension of leadership. Having worked with a diversified team to contribute to relevant global knowledge is an experience that is vital in my career journey, which I am proud to have.”
David said, “Trent University brought us together and the paper allowed us to research one of the most relevant topics in the world today, and of the future.”
