Keeping Students Warm with Winter Clothing Drive
Trent community prepares international students for Canadian winter through clothing drive and cold weather information session
Trent International (TI) called on the Trent community to support new international students experiencing their first cold winter – and that call was answered, in coats, gloves, scarves, and more.
Faculty, staff, and students donated their winter gear of all sizes, styles, and for all ages, including children's clothes for students who have kids or young siblings. Hosted at the new Advanced Learning Centre in downtown Oshawa, this was TI’s first Winter Clothing Drive held at the Trent University Durham GTA Campus.
Roohina Ismail ‘23 (Champlain College), international student program assistant at TI, joined Trent University as a student from Tanzania, East Africa. As a former international student herself, she understands the need for these students to not only have the clothing they need to keep warm, but to also learn how to enjoy the colder months.
Along with handing out the collected clothing, the TI team also hosted their Survive and Thrive in Winter event, where staff shared valuable tips and tricks for enduring the cold weather. Some topics included layering, best places to shop for winter gear, along with topics such as where to enjoy winter games and activities.
“I felt really emotional because I saw myself in those students. I truly felt the impact of my role that day, and I’m grateful to have the opportunity to support these students,” said Roohina.
Haleema Zulqarnain, a TI student-staff member, said TI has been there to help her throughout her time at the University, which is why she felt it was important to help organize the event for first-generation international students.
“I want to be there to be there for others and share my own experiences as an international student so they can have an easier transition.”
TI at Trent Durham plans to host another clothing drive next semester for new students starting in the winter term. Watch for more information on how to get involved.
