Driving Success: $75,000 Raised in Support of Varsity Student-Athletes at Annual President’s Excalibur Golf Tournament
Trent University president Leo Groarke hosted the 17th annual tournament to support Trent Excalibur Green and White Scholarships
Golfers teed off at the 17th annual President’s Excalibur Golf Tournament at the Peterborough Golf and Country Club on June 29, raising $75,000 in support of the Trent Excalibur Green and White Scholarship fund supporting exceptional first-year student-athletes at the University.
“It has been an outstanding year for our Excalibur program,” said Dr. Leo Groarke, president and vice-chancellor at Trent University, who hosted the event. “Investing in student-athletes through scholarships and bursaries removes barriers to participation and creates new opportunities for talented students from all backgrounds to study and compete at the highest level without financial constraints. I would like to thank all our sponsors and guests who supported this year's tournament.”
The tournament was attended by members of the Trent Board of Governors, University senior administrators, and community business leaders. It was hosted in partnership with title sponsor Ameresco, a leading independent provider of comprehensive services, energy efficiency, infrastructure upgrades, asset sustainability and renewable energy solutions for facilities throughout North America.
“It’s thanks to the support of our generous partners that our high-performance Excalibur varsity program continues to grow and flourish,” said Leslie Spooner, interim director at Trent Athletics. “We are grateful for the continued support of our title sponsor, Ameresco, and all tournament sponsors for their contributions which help us to continue to recruit the best and brightest student-athletes to join our Excalibur family.”
With an impressive 19 foursomes at this year's event, the winning team was Swish. Other winners included Peter Christiansen (men’s) and Christine Thomas (women’s) for Closest-to-the-Pin, and Rick Teasdale (men’s) and Lisa Bruce (women’s) for Longest Drive.
The day was capped off with a dinner, featuring remarks from President Groarke and Debra Cooper Burger, chair of the Board of Governors, as well as a keynote speech from Brianna Tombs, a member of the Excalibur women’s rowing team and a graduating Trent student with a Bachelor of Science in biology. Brianna is an accomplished varsity rower and former president of the Trent University Rowing Club. Together with doubles teammate Grace Vandenbroek, she won silver at the 2022 OUA Rowing Championships and a bronze in the women’s doubles with teammate Rebecca Dockray.
Congratulations and thanks go out to everyone who participated, with special appreciation to the many generous sponsors who helped make this year’s event such a success.
