Trent Community Mourns the Passing of Canadian Music Icon Dr. Gordon Lightfoot
Acclaimed singer-songwriter and Trent University honorary degree recipient leaves a legacy in Canadian music history
The Trent community is saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Gordon Lightfoot ‘79 D. Law. (hon), the beloved Canadian singer-songwriter who penned timeless classics like Dream Street Road and The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Throughout his illustrious career, Gordon received numerous accolades for his contributions to Canadian music, including the Order of Canada, Governor General’s Award, 12 Juno Awards, four Grammy nominations, and an honorary degree from Trent University in 1979. He was known for his evocative storytelling and poetic lyrics, which captured the essence of Canadian life and landscapes. Gordon's influence on the Canadian and global music scenes are immeasurable, and his songs will continue to be celebrated for generations to come.
The University extends heartfelt sympathies to Gordon’s family and friends, and to all who knew him at Trent.
In honour of Gordon’s memory, the University will lower the flag atop Bata Library and the Durham GTA campus to the half-mast position on the day of his service.
