The Trent Excalibur Men’s lacrosse team will host the 2022 Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association (CUFLA) Baggataway Cup Championship at Justin Chiu Stadium from November 4 - 6.
“It is my pleasure to welcome athletes, fans and visitors to Trent University for the 2022 Baggataway Cup. Congratulations to the athletes and teams on making it to this point of the competition – I can’t think of a finer backdrop to round out a great season,” said Dr. Leo Groarke, president and vice-chancellor of Trent University. “While you are here, I hope that you have the chance to explore our beautiful campus, award-winning architecture, world-class facilities, and downtown Peterborough.”
Trent University men’s lacrosse finished the 2022/23 regular season as the number one seed in the East division, securing a bye to the semi-finals in the Baggataway Cup. This is the second time Trent has hosted the event since the team’s inception into CUFLA in 2007. The championship was first hosted at Trent in 2012. “We are thrilled to be hosting this signature CUFLA championship event again at Trent and are honoured to welcome competitors and fans to Justin Chiu Stadium,” said Leslie Spooner, interim director, of Athletics and Recreation at Trent. “Our Excalibur men’s lacrosse team has had an incredible season and we can’t wait to cheer on our green and white at home during the Baggataway Cup Championship weekend.”
This championship weekend is happening during a historically significant time for the Peterborough community. This summer, the City of Peterborough celebrated 150 years of lacrosse history and saw the Century 21 Peterborough Lakers win their fourth consecutive Mann Cup Championship. The weekend will begin with the first quarter-final game on Friday at 4:30 p.m. The second quarter-final game will start Friday at 7:30 p.m. Semi-finals will begin on Saturday with Trent Excalibur’s first game – a face-off with the winner of quarter-final #1 at 1:30 p.m. The second semi-final game will begin at 4:30 p.m.
The Baggataway Cup final will take place on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. immediately followed by an awards presentation. “We’re excited to have the opportunity to compete at Justin Chiu Stadium, in front of the hometown fans,” said Mark Farthing, head coach of the Excalibur men’s lacrosse team. “The city is well-known for lacrosse, not only at Trent but also in the Peterborough region as well. It will be a great opportunity to have the whole community come watch and support us during the championship weekend.”
This is a family-friendly event that will feature a barbeque and concession stand (no alcohol will be served), Baggataway Cup gear for sale, and an elite level of lacrosse on display throughout the weekend. A local high school all-star game will also take place at 11:00 a.m. before the championship game on Sunday. Day and weekend passes will be available for purchase at the gate and in-person at the Trent Athletics Centre. Trent students and children under 12 can attend for free.
