Trent University Statement on Protests in Iran
Wellness and financial supports available for students, faculty and staff
Trent University supports the women of Iran, and those who seek to stand up against repression and discrimination.
Human rights and equity for women and all people, regardless of race, sex, nationality, language, religion, or any other status, is fundamental. At Trent, we promote and defend freedom of expression and the free exchange ideas as pillars of a functioning society. On our campuses and together with our global partners, we value diversity, social justice and equity and condemn acts of violence against women.
As a post-secondary institution, we are concerned by reports that Iranian security forces have clashed with students at a university in Tehran. Universities are gathering places for the mobilization of knowledge and ideas, and violence on any university campus stands in contrast to fundamental values of peace, order and democracy.
This situation is distressing for many in our University community, especially individuals from Iran and those who have ties to family, friends and colleagues in Iran. Trent is extending support and resources for students, faculty and staff affected by events in Iran:
- Supports are also available through Counselling Services in Peterborough: 705-748-1386 or counselling@trentu.ca and in at our Durham campus: durhamcounselling@trentu.ca.
- Volunteer chaplains and community liaisons from various faith traditions in the community are also available to students through Trent Spiritual Affairs’ Multi-faith Network. · Staff and faculty in need of support can access Lifeworks: Employee Assistance Plan.
- Trent International can always be reached for resources and support at trentinternational@trentu.ca.
