Second Annual Trent Day Celebrates Inception of University, Founding Values
On April 8, the Trent University community will showcase cornerstone traits of support, spirit and service
In April 1963, Trent University signed the Trent University Act and was officially granted the ability to confer degrees. This moment marked one of Trent’s first steps taken to become the industry-leading institution it is known as today. Now nearly 60 years later, Trent University celebrates Trent Day, an annual event in April that pays tribute to the University’s history, values and community.
Trent Day 2022 takes place on Friday, April 8, which will see the Trent University community—locally and around the world—come together to support student needs, showcase school spirit and give back through volunteer service and philanthropy.
“Trent Day is an opportunity to acknowledge and appreciate our community of alumni, staff, faculty and donors, while rallying everyone around a showcase of university spirit, support for students and investment in community well-being,” says Sherry Booth, associate vice president, Philanthropy & Alumni Engagement at Trent University. “This is great way to celebrate Trent, and we hope all members of the Trent community will show their Trent pride, take part in Trent Day activities, or make a gift to assist and empower a student.”
How to take part in Trent Day:
1. Offer Support
In the spirit of giving, the Trent University Alumni Association is kicking off the 24-hour fundraising challenge with $20,000 in matching funds to support emerging student needs. The first $20,000 donated to the Trent Fund in honour of Trent Day, either through a one-time or monthly gift, will be matched dollar-for-dollar. Make a gift to the Trent Fund today.
2. Participate in Service
Alumni and community members around the globe will come together in one unified display of service by volunteering with organizations in their area. University and alumni leaders will offer a variety of group volunteer opportunities throughout the day, including in Peterborough at Kawartha Food Share, in Durham at Feed the Need, in East Gwillimbury at Sharon Temple and Victoria, B.C. at Power to Be. Learn more about all volunteer service opportunities.
Contribute to the Trent Day Food Drive: To bring the spirit of service to campus, a food drive will take place on both the Peterborough and Durham GTA campuses. Staff, faculty, students, alumni and community members in the area are encouraged to bring their non-perishable items to donation booths stationed on both campuses between 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 8. Trent Day tents will be set up across from the Bata parking lot on Symons Campus, and outside of the new residence building on the Durham GTA campus ready to accept donations. All donations will support Kawartha Food Share in Peterborough and Feed the Need Durham in Oshawa.
3. Show your Spirit
Virtual social events taking place on Trent Day include the ever-popular PINGO (Pig’s Ear Pingo) taking place 8:00 to 9:30 p.m. on April 8. Join hosts Hailey Burkitt-Cooper ’04 and Phil Cooper ’01 as they welcome the beloved proprietors of the Pig’s Ear Tavern, honorary Trent alumni Lylie Ryder and John Punter, for a live-streamed, interactive, authentic PINGO experience. Advanced registration is required and available online.
Community members are encouraged to show their pride on social media. Share your memories or post photos in Trent gear and tag @TrentAlumni and use the #TrentDay hashtag.
