Trent University Mourns the Passing of William (Bill) G. Davis
Former Premier of Ontario, education visionary and Trent honorary degree recipient was a celebrated advocate for public education and the important role of educators in our society
The Trent community is saddened to learn of the passing of The Honorable William (Bill) Davis, the 18th premier of Ontario, and former minister of Education and minister of University Affairs. Dr. Davis was best known for the profound impact he had as the premier of Ontario from 1971 to 1985.
“Bill Davis played a significant role in the history of universities in Ontario,” said Dr. Leo Groarke, president of Trent University. “His belief in education and vision for the future paved the way for the establishment of Trent, something that came full circle when he was presented with an honorary degree here in 2010. It is with sadness that we mourn his passing.”
Born in Brampton, Ontario in 1929, Dr. Davis was first elected to the Ontario Legislature in 1959 and served as a member of the provincial legislature for 26 years. His influence in politics extended well beyond the borders of the province, seeing him play a pivotal role in the negotiations leading to the repatriation of the constitution.
His appointment as minister of Education in 1962 and duties as minister of University Affairs in 1964, both positions he held until 1971, saw Dr. Davis establish new public universities, including Trent University. Instrumental in the development of Trent, Dr. Davis marched proudly alongside founding president T.H.B. Symons at the head of the procession during Trent’s opening ceremonies in October of 1964.
In 2010, Dr. Davis was recognized with an honorary degree from Trent – the University’s highest honour – acknowledging his contribution to the University and his commitment to the importance of education in society. Named as a companion of the Order of Canada in 1985, Dr. Davis leaves behind a meaningful legacy that has shaped the Province of Ontario.
Trent extends heartfelt sympathies to Dr. Davis’ family and friends.
In honour of Dr. Davis, the flag atop the Bata Library will be lowered to half-mast position on November 4, 2021, the day of his memorial service.
