New Medical Pathway Offers Trent Students Unique Hospital Clerkships as Undergraduates
Agreement with University of Medicine and Health Sciences puts Trent students on fast track to careers in medicine
Thursday, February 25, 2021, Peterborough
Trent University has partnered with the University of Medicine and Health Sciences (UMHS) to create a new pathway for Trent graduates to fast track to medical school and take the next steps towards a career in medicine.
“Getting into a medical school close to home is becoming increasingly competitive for Canadian students, even as demand for qualified physicians is growing,” said Dr. Holger Hintelmann, dean of Arts and Science, Science at Trent University. “We’re proud to partner with an international medical school that will offer our students a clearer path to realizing their dreams. Like Trent, UMHS takes a personalized approach to education and has recorded an impressive 100% pass rate on the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE Part I) for the last four years – setting up our students for a successful future in medicine.”
This new pathway is reflective of the synergies shared between Trent and UMHS, two institutions that value personalized education and smaller class sizes. UMHS, located on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts, provides a personalized medical education for each student, and is dedicated to training the next generation of world-class physicians. UMHS also offers students access to state-of-the-art facilities and unparalleled support.
“We’re pleased to partner with Trent University, a school with a like-minded approach to higher education,” said Warren Ross, president of UMHS. “Trent University is focused on personal, purposeful, and transformative education, and Trent graduates entering our program will build upon that foundation to become well-educated, adaptable, and compassionate doctors. We’re excited to welcome qualified Trent graduates to the UMHS family.”
Beginning in their third year of study, up to three students enrolled in Trent’s Medical Professional Stream (MPS) will have the opportunity to be selected to enter clinical clerkships at UMHS facilities in Portland, Maine. UMHS also has an exceptional legacy for successful residency placements – connecting students with prestigious hospitals across the United States and in Canada in diverse specialties and training programs.
The partnership provides Trent students who successfully complete the Medical Professional Stream with an opportunity to qualify for direct entry to pursue an M.D. at the University of Medical and Health Sciences, one of the most prestigious medical schools in the Caribbean.
Trent now offers three direct pathways for MPS students into medical and veterinary schools, including UMHS, Trinity Medical Sciences University and St. George’s University.
Trent University’s Medical Professional Stream is a one-of-a-kind preparatory program that can be completed jointly with any B.A. or B.Sc. degree, and offers students support and guidance services, including tailored training to prepare for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).
Applications to Trent’s Medical Professional Stream remain open for fall 2021. Apply today.
