With two parents working in healthcare, and a natural inclination to help others, it was no question that Owen Sutton would pursue a career in Nursing. He decided that Trent University was the best option for him, with its dedicated class sizes, unique partnership with Fleming College, and opportunities to get hands-on early as one of the few programs that allowed for first year students to complete a placement.

“I am very fortunate to have utilized my extracurricular experiences throughout my four years, and I believe I am a much different individual than I was in my first year because of this,” says Mr. Sutton.

Starting in his second year, Mr. Sutton pursued extracurriculars that would broaden his perspective and help him on his career path. Each activity, from his involvement in Gzowski College Cabinet to volunteering with Trent University Emergency First Response Team, has strengthened his résumé while greatly improving his knowledge for his field.

The things he learned by being involved with TUEFRT and donning for Gzowski College, served Mr. Sutton well in class, placements, and his trip to Honduras in February of 2019, as part a study abroad opportunity for Nursing students. He has also gotten involved with Trent Active Minds, a move that has broadened his perspectives on mental health.

“While learning mental health outside my program and in extracurriculars, I notice how applicable these skills are towards my career,” notes Mr. Sutton. “Active listening, asking the right questions, and talking about well-being are all golden while assisting these patients.”
