New International Agreement Provides Trent Students with Direct Entry Pathway to Med School in Caribbean and USA
Trent and Trinity Medical Sciences University pathway features funded clerkship in the US during their undergrad as well as generous $25,000 - $35,000 scholarships to med school
Through an innovative new international partnership agreement, graduates of Trent’s Medical Professional Stream (MPS) will be able to pursue their Doctor of Medicine at Trinity Medical Sciences University (TMSU) in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, as well as their campuses in the United States.
“We are pleased to be working alongside Trinity Medical Sciences University to offer Trent students a unique international learning and career experience as the world’s future healthcare professionals,” said Dr. Leo Groarke, president and vice-chancellor of Trent University. “Trent’s Medical Professional Stream combines with our distinctly personal learning environment to provide the balanced and nuanced thinking that institutions seek for the doctors of tomorrow.”
The agreement between Trent and Trinity features a career-enhancing competitive opportunity for students to pursue a funded “clerkship” during their second or third year at Trent at TMSU’s teaching hospitals in the USA. The clerkship includes transportation costs and features opportunities to take part in lectures and meet faculty and hospital leadership.
“This new partnership will help students in the Medical Professional Stream become practicing physicians,” added Dr. Holger Hintelmann, dean of Arts and Science, Science at Trent University. “It provides a clear, defined path to achieving a challenging goal. It also provides a unique opportunity for students to take their education global, while having the option to return to practice in Canada.”
Following successful completion of the MPS at Trent, students prequalify for conditional acceptance to Trinity’s Doctor of Medicine program. Graduates also automatically qualify for generous scholarships at Trinity to help make their pursuit of a career in medicine more affordable. Those who attain a score of 490-494 on their MCATs will receive a scholarship in the amount of $25,000 US, while students scoring 500 will receive $35,000 US.
"We are very excited about our recent partnership with Trent University. Trent University's Medical Professional Stream is one of Canada's best programs for preparing students for the rigors of the M.D. degree program at Trinity School of Medicine,” said Trinity School of Medicine president and CEO Steven Wilson. “Together, we have developed a streamlined admissions process with automatic acceptance for Trent students who meet the minimum required standards. We have also created a large scholarship pool for Trent applicants to further extend the partnership benefits directly to the student. These benefits will help offset the costs of the U.S. dollar exchange rates and the generally high cost of medical school attendance."
At Trinity, one of the top accredited schools in the Caribbean, clinical experience begins in the first term for MD students. Following two years of comprehensive study, including clinical experience, students can transition to the U.S. for clinical clerkships. While studying in the Caribbean, students also have the opportunity to volunteer with the World Pediatric Project, which serves at-risk children from throughout the Caribbean region. TMSU is accredited by CAAM-HP and meets accreditation requirements for international medical schools in both Canada and the United States. Successful graduates of the TMSU medical school are qualified to complete their residencies and write their licensure exams in the US or Canada, qualifying them to practice in either country upon completion of their residencies.
Applications for fall 2021 entry to Trent’s Medical Professional Stream are now open.
