Trent University and Fleming College Announce New Learning Pathways for Educators
Graduates of Educational Support and Early Childhood Education diploma programs will earn credits toward Teacher Education Stream degree at Trent
A new articulation agreement will allow education diploma graduates from Fleming College to seamlessly transition to Trent University’s Teacher Education Stream degree program as they continue on their path toward careers in teaching.
For Trent, the partnership deepens ties with the Peterborough community and helps ensure that new teachers will be prepared for the diverse opportunities and challenges they will encounter in the classroom.
“Early childhood education has long-term benefits that contribute to life-long success, and we all benefit when students with special needs have the support that they need to realize their full potential,” says Dr. Cathy Bruce, dean of Education, Teaching and Learning at Trent. “By working together, Trent University and Fleming College are making Ontario’s schools, and our communities, stronger.”
The new learning pathway is available for Fleming College graduates from both the Educational Support diploma, which trains students to support children in the classroom with special needs, and the Early Childhood Education (ECE) diploma, which equips graduates with the skills and knowledge needed to work with young children in active classroom-learning environments.
“At Fleming College, we seek to develop transferable skills for our students, and to partner within our community to make a positive impact,” added Fleming College president Maureen Adamson. “Graduates who choose to continue their education at Trent will be able to apply the skills they’ve learned at both institutions in Ontario classrooms. This type of partnership contributes to Fleming College’s vision of making the Greater Peterborough Area a destination of choice by building economic prosperity and social benefits.”
Under the new agreement with Trent, eligible Educational Support graduates will be able to obtain 5.0 credits toward the 20.0-credit Bachelor of Arts (Honours) within the Teacher Education Stream, while ECE graduates can now obtain 7.0 credits towards their Bachelor’s degree.
Trent University remains open to applications for many programs, including the Teacher Education Stream. Fleming College continues to accept applications for its Educational Support and Early Childhood Education diploma programs.
