Trent University Supports Students in Financial Need Through New Philanthropic Initiative
Trent launches Change Makers Challenge to meet increasing need during COVID-19 pandemic
With student financial aid requests on the rise amidst the ongoing pandemic, Trent University is taking action by introducing Change Makers – a philanthropic initiative aimed at providing essential funding to students in need.
“The fall is normally a time when we welcome thousands of eager students from across the world to our two campuses in Peterborough and Durham Region,” says Julie Davis, vice-resident, External Relations & Advancement at Trent University. “This fall will be different as students are facing extra hurdles and many are at risk of not being able to pursue their dreams of returning to their studies due to financial difficulties.”
The Change Makers campaign aims to raise awareness of and funds for the new Student Relief Fund, which was established in April to provide financial aid to Trent students in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The funds will be distributed through Trent University’s established bursary process.
The deans at Trent University have united to commit $50,000 to the Student Relief Fund and they’re hoping the Trent community can join them by also making a donation to the fund.
“We believe in our students’ abilities and want to help prevent financial and personal challenges from being a roadblock for them to pursue their education,” says Dr. Mark Skinner, dean of Social Sciences and Humanities. “We encourage those who are able to accept the challenge today and help us raise $100,000 (an additional $50,000 to the deans’ contribution) to support students in need.”
Those wishing to be part of the campaign are encouraged to:
- Watch the Change Maker video and learn from student association leaders how the pandemic has impacted their educational goals and dreams.
- Join the University’s free educational webinar series, TrentTalks, to learn about some of the biggest issues facing our rapidly changing world and consider making an optional donation to the Student Relief Fund through registration.
- Accept the Change Maker Challenge and help match the deans’ $50,000 commitment and ensure that no student’s education is cut short due to financial hardship.
