Trent University Now Home to Canada’s First Accredited University Nursing Simulation Centre
Trent/Fleming School of Nursing’s Trent Simulation Hub demonstrates highest professional standards through international accreditation
In a first for a Canadian university, the Trent/Fleming School of Nursing (TFSON) Trent Simulation Hub has been fully accredited for the highest standards in teaching and learning through the Society of Simulation in Healthcare (SSH).
“We are proud of this accomplishment as the Trent/Fleming School of Nursing continues to put Trent Nursing on the map as a leading program across the country,” says Dr. Kirsten Woodend, dean of TFSON. “We know students and local healthcare professionals are excited to keep learning and training in a now-internationally accredited simulation learning centre that offers cutting-edge innovation.”
SSH accreditation is based on core standards of mission and governance, program management, resource management, human resources, program improvement, integrity and expanding the field.
“Our Hub has always offered a tremendous experiential-learning opportunity for students,” adds Meaghen Regts, Hub coordinator. “Now we have an internationally recognized accredited simulation program that speaks to our expertise, professionalism, and commitment to the highest standards in teaching and learning.”
In the state-of-the-art Trent Simulation Hub students get hands-on experience in real-world healthcare scenarios such as working in a hospital, providing care at home or in long-term care facilities, and working as a street nurse. The Hub provides an environment that is safe for learners to take risks and explore their nursing practice before working with clients in clinical settings.
Simulation runs the gamut from the use of high-fidelity mannequins to task trainers for skills development, and simulated participants that support relational skills. Mannequins can be used to simulate the birthing process, acute illness and chronic disease management. Through the Hub, nursing students also participate in virtual clinical excursions.
Along with educating students, the TFSON: Trent Simulation Hub also collaborates and shares resources with local healthcare institutions including Peterborough Hospice, Peterborough Regional Health Centre and Haliburton Highlands Health Services.
The Hub employs professional registered staff including two certified healthcare simulation educators and six SIM-one certified simulationists.
“We acknowledge and respect their expertise in facilitating and evaluating simulation and we are dedicated to providing continued opportunities for professional development,” Ms. Regts says. “This accreditation status is a testament to the exceptional team of people who work here.”
