Student-Led Academic Mentoring Program Provides Virtual Support to Trent Durham Students
With summer term underway, virtual programs and connecting with students remain top priorities
With the move to remote learning for the summer term, the Academic Mentoring Program at Trent Durham has adapted programing and support to meet the needs of Trent Durham students studying in a virtual environment.
In her new role as academic mentoring coordinator, Anna Strojwons, a third year English major in the Teacher Education Stream, is leading the way in this shift to virtual student supports.
Tasked with developing an entirely virtual approach to academic peer support, an enthusiastic Ms. Strojwons says that the basic principles behind the Academic Mentoring Program remain the same even in a virtual environment.
“I love the idea of students supporting students,” she ways. “Sometimes, especially for early year students, it can be intimidating to reach out for help, but our mentors are understanding, encouraging and here to support you.”
Through study groups, one-on-one mentoring, developing strategies for success, and connecting students with relevant supports, the Academic Mentoring Program encourages students to explore their academic potential…and for now, all online.
“I hope to reach and empower as many students as we can through this program and enrich their University experience,” says Ms. Strojwons.
Some of the current offerings include a joint initiative with the Psychology Club to establish a group chat, as well as weekly study groups via Zoom. An interdisciplinary study group will also run weekly, through Zoom, plus an Accounting session is being developed.
Additional interdisciplinary sessions will run on an as needed basis through one-on-one mentoring sessions (via Zoom). Times and dates to be determined, and will depend on the response from students.
For more details as sessions are added check out the Academic Mentoring Program webpage.
