Enhanced public transportation service in Durham Region will be a boon to post-secondary education in the region

An enhancement to GO Train service in Durham Region, approved yesterday by Metrolinx, will see four new train stations added, and dramatically enhance access to post-secondary institutions in Durham, providing new transportation options for students, staff and the broader community.

“Durham Region is undergoing a transformation that Trent is excited to be a part of,” explained Dr. Leo Groarke, Trent’s president and vice-chancellor. “We believe that our career programming and experiential learning, and our dramatic on-campus growth, will be a positive connection to the region’s evolving identity. The plans for a GO Train station close to our growing campus will deepen the connection between Trent and the wider community. We believe the new line will be a boost for all the
post-secondary institutions in Durham, and is a development we are pleased to see move forward.”

“This GO Train announcement comes at an exciting time, as we prepare to welcome students to live on campus for the first-time ever this fall,” said Dr. Scott Henderson, dean and head of Trent Durham GTA. “With improved transportation options, Trent Durham continues to evolve as an incredibly attractive campus community to live, work, study and thrive. Enhanced connections can improve both convenience and overall quality of life for our students and all of Durham’s post-secondary students.”

The new recommended route will see the eastward extension of Go Train service through the current Oshawa GO station, and subsequently tie into the CP rail line north of the 401, with four new stations at Thornton’s Corners East, Ritson Road, Courtice and Bowmanville.
