Among the Greenest in the World: Trent University Ranked Among Top 100 Environmental Campuses Worldwide
Annual UI GreenMetric World University Ranking lists Trent’s environmental leadership as #6 in Canada
For over 50 years, Trent has been known for its commitment to environmental leadership, and now the world is also taking notice, as the University has been named among the top 100 environmental university campuses worldwide, and in the top 10 in Canada, in the recently released 2018 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings.
“Trent’s impressive competitive position in this global ranking for the second year running really shows our leadership when it comes to the environment,” says Stephanie Williams, acting vice-president of Finance and Administration, and associate vice-president Human Resources at Trent. “As home to the prestigious School of the Environment, and the future site for Cleantech Commons, Trent University is pushing the limits on how to make our campus, and ultimately our planet, more sustainable, and that work isn’t going unnoticed.”
Ranking as the 80th greenest campus in the world, and sixth in Canada, up from Trent’s seventh place ranking last year, Trent was recognized for leadership in six categories, including: setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste, water, transportation, and education and research. Trent ranked first in Canada for setting and infrastructure, and the education and research categories, and third in Canada in the waste section of the rankings. Trent also scored 18% more points in 2018 compared to the 2017 ranking showing Trent’s continued work to improve green standards on campus.
The GreenMetric rankings, which ranked 719 universities in 81 countries worldwide, is the first and only university rankings in the world that measure each participating university’s commitment in developing an ‘environmentally friendly’ infrastructure.
“I am impressed with Trent maintaining such a competitive position in the ranking this year with more stringent criteria and 100 more participants,” said Shelley Strain, sustainability coordinator at Trent University. “The Green Metric is a great way to keep Trent tracking toward improved performance in many areas”
Trent University has been a leader in environmental teaching and research since its inception in 1964. As home to the Trent School of the Environment, Trent is the university of choice for future environmental leaders. Trent’s submission to the UI GreenMetric showcased how the university incorporates green technologies into campus buildings, the many programs in place around campus to reduce the use of paper and plastic, including a very successful reusable take-out tray program, and the extensive academic courses offered across a variety of disciplines and programs related to the environment and sustainability.
