Drake Sullivan: Philosophy Student, Applied Ethicist, Trent Durham GTA Philosophy Society President & Former Varsity Soccer Player
Applying critical perspectives to contemporary ethical questions
Pursuing an emphasis in Applied Ethics, Drake Sullivan examines pressing issues related to the structure of the state and how people ought to act in classes such as Philosophy of Law, Justice and Rights, and Biomedical Ethics. Planning to attend law school in the fall, Mr. Sullivan looks forward to relating his philosophical knowledge to practical concerns in areas such as Constitutional Law, Human Rights Law, and Criminal Law.
Originally taking a Philosophy course as an elective, Mr. Sullivan soon realized that he had found his preferred area of study.
“I eventually just kind of had an epiphany – you know what, Philosophy is what I enjoy doing, and I’m going to pursue that,” said Mr. Sullivan. “I think Philosophy, if you’re not familiar with the topic, it can be quite overwhelming for people, especially because it’s such a new way of thinking. I would just say the skills it’s taught me, honestly, the critical thinking ability and the analytical thinking ability I value a lot. Especially in today’s day and age I think it’s an incredibly important skill to have and it’s widely applicable to many different areas.”
A critical philosopher, ethicist, and student leader, Mr. Sullivan truly exemplifies the type of teaching and learning Trent is renowned for, and which the Centre for Teaching and Learning is proud to showcase.
