Exploring the expressiveness of written correspondence, local artist Wendy Trusler will present her award-winning Voices at Hand exhibition at Trent University’s Catharine Parr Traill College in downtown Peterborough as the College’s artist-in-residence from January 29 through to February 2, 2018.

As the 2018 artist-in-residence at Traill College, Ms. Trusler will provide requested readings from nearly 4,000 archived letters spanning 218 years of correspondence. She invites members of the Trent community and the public to contribute their own letters to the engaging exhibit. This is the third time Ms. Trusler has held the artist-in-residence title at Trent, after completing residencies in 2012 and 2014.

“In speaking with the range of student thinkers at Traill College, I hope to trigger ideas, tease out other ways of knowing, and test new ways of sharing the Voices at Hand archive,” reveals Ms. Trusler. “I hope visitors will come away with a broader sense of what art can be. I would be thrilled if my research inspired Traill students and faculty.”

“We are excited to see how this ever-changing work has evolved since we saw it in 2014,” says Dr. Michael Eamon, principal of Traill College. “Bringing practicing artists into the University, via the colleges, enriches not only the student experience, but offers enrichment for the entire Peterborough community. That is what the artist-in-residence and other collegiate programming does at Trent on a daily basis.”

Wendy Trusler is an interdisciplinary artist, designer and writer. Her site-responsive installations incorporate drawing, painting, text, sculpture, performance, and film. Recent projects include The Antarctic Book of Cooking and Cleaning and Collective Vision—The Fine Art of Health. Voices at Hand has been mounted in nine venues across Ontario and has reached audiences in 26 countries.
