Trent's environmental leadership recognized as #7 in Canada by UI GreenMetric World University Ranking; Trent also ranks #22 in Education section of global rankings
It’s official – Trent University is one of the world’s top green universities, securing a place among the top 100 environmental university campuses worldwide, and the top 10 in Canada, according to the recently released UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2017.
“This international ranking confirms Trent’s continued commitment to the environment, and our position as a leading institution in environmental issues,” said Dr. Leo Groarke, president and vice-chancellor of Trent University. “With the new Cleantech Commons at Trent University set to become a destination for green businesses, our well-established School of the Environment, and the University in the process of upgrading 20 campus buildings to further reduce our carbon footprint, it’s no surprise that Trent ranks among the most environmental conscious universities around the globe.”
Ranking as the 73rd greenest campus in the world, and #7 in Canada, Trent was recognized for leadership in six categories, including: setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste, water, transportation, and education. Trent ranked #30 in the waste management section and #22 in the Education section of the rankings.
The GreenMetric rankings, which ranked 619 universities in 76 countries worldwide, is the first and only university rankings in the world that measure each participating university’s commitment in developing an ‘environmentally friendly’ infrastructure.
“What I really like about the GreenMetric rankings is that it not only highlights areas where Trent is excelling in sustainability efforts, but also areas, such as water conservation, where more work can be done,” said Shelley Strain, sustainability coordinator at Trent University. “Facilities is in the construction phase of a $15.5 million energy conservation project that should help Trent see an even better result in these rankings next year.”
Trent University has been a leader in environmental teaching and research since its inception in 1964. With over 50 years of leadership in the environment, and as home to the Trent School of the Environment, Trent is the university of choice for future environmental leaders. Trent’s submission to the UI GreenMetric showcased the Universities LEED certified buildings, the many programs in place around campus to reduce the use of paper and plastic, including a successful reusable take-out tray program that was launched this past fall, and the extensive academic courses offered across a variety of disciplines and programs related to the environment and sustainability.
