New Degree Options at Trent University Allow Students to Further Enhance their Degrees
Enhanced programming through "mini minors" provides students with additional interdisciplinary learning opportunities
Adding another layer to Trent University’s suite of degree choices for students to expand their learning and design a degree that’s unique to them, Trent is introducing new options, an enhanced degree offering, in Legal Studies, International Development and Marketing, complementing a growing roster of specialized education opportunities for students.
“Introducing options to our programming at both Trent campuses this fall is value-added for our students,” remarked Dr. Jackie Muldoon, provost and vice-president academic at Trent University. “This is an excellent opportunity for students to broaden the scope of their degree and embrace a multifaceted learning experience.”
Options, which can be described as “mini-minors,” are a set of courses in one discipline that can be completed in conjunction with any undergraduate degree program. Options allow a student to focus on an additional subject of interest, and incorporate that expertise into their degree program.
Available to students at both Trent campuses this fall, the new options offer a practical learning experience and enhanced career opportunities. The Option in International Development Studies provides students with a critical understanding of the processes of change that shape the globe and allows students to explore the relationship between colonialism, development, and globalization to address varying issues in different regions of the world. The Legal Studies option delves into the study of Canadian law and the theories and methods of diverse legal topics. Students undertaking an option in Marketing will explore the fundamentals of business marketing, advertising, market research and beyond.
Options are integrated into a degree with as little as four required courses so that students take only the number of credits required in either an Honours or General program and replace some of their electives with the options courses.
The addition of options to Trent’s degree programs highlights the University’s commitment to an interdisciplinary approach to teaching and learning. With a more personalized and tailored degree, students who graduate with an option will do so with a distinct advantage as they move onto employment opportunities or further their research or studies.
