Meet a Trent Student: Shawn Murphy, Sociology
“I got to meet a lot of great people and I got to really develop a lot of skills that I wouldn't have been able to otherwise. Beyond that, I excelled academically. The second I started getting more involved my grades skyrocketed.”
As the former president of the Trent Durham Student Association (TDSA) and previous TDSA vice-president of University Affairs, recent Sociology graduate Shawn Murphy knows a lot about the benefits of getting involved while studying at Trent.
It all began in his second year at Trent University Durham when Mr. Murphy decided to get as involved as possible by joining the TDSA Board of Directors, as the director for Sociology. From that point on, his involvement led to opportunities to present his research and look over corporate budgets.
Mr. Murphy says that his involvement also led to higher academic success. “Being involved makes sure that you're on campus more,” says Mr. Murphy. “The longer you're on campus it's statistically shown that your grades are going to increase, so getting involved is beneficial across the board.”
Mr. Murphy praises the tight-knit Trent Durham community and its role in assisting the success of students. “Trent University really excels at making sure that you have great connections with absolutely every person that's in your class as well as your professors, the administration, all levels. You get to know everything about the university on a very easy basis. It's a fantastic network.”
Trent University prides itself on providing an outstanding personal and interactive learning environment. This story is part of the #MeetaTrentStudent series, which highlights our many student success stories and the numerous dynamic programs offered at Trent.
