Over 30 grade 1-12 students from the Peterborough community were welcomed to campus recently for the annual Math Kangaroo contest and award ceremony, hosted at Gzowski College. 

Math Kangaroo, a program which first began in France in 1991, was established to create a fun and engaging relationship between students and mathematics. Math Kangaroo has since gained popularity across Canada with 35 cities now participating. This year was Peterborough’s first year of participation.

The Trent Math Department was invited in 2015 to host the contest this year and saw it as an opportunity to support the Peterborough community. Trent also collaborated with math major undergraduate students to run preparation courses for the participants.

“The kids did exceptionally well,” said coordinator and Trent faculty member in the Math department, Dr. Nicolae Strungaru. “One student got second place in Canada, and two more obtained national gold medals, offered for finishing in top 6 percent. In total 7 of 34 students finished in top 10% nationally, which is most likely one of the best result in Canada.”

The next Math Kangaroo contest will be held in 2017.
