Going Global: Together Exhibit Inspires Students to be Global Citizens
Partnership with Aga Khan Foundation of Canada brings display to Trent
“It inspired me to make a change in the world.” This was the reaction of first year student in International Development Studies, Cassandra Perau, after visiting a touring exhibit brought to Trent last week through a partnership between the Trent University Department of International Development Studies, the Student Association for International Development, and the Aga Khan Foundation of Canada (AKFC).
Together: An Exhibition on Global Development, was created to fit inside a transport truck, allowing it to reach communities across Canada. The unique display was accessible to all students, allowing them to delve into global development challenges and solutions from across the globe.
“This was an opportunity to expose students that do not take international development to see what it means to be a global citizen, which is integral to the mission of the University,” explained exhibit facilitator, Dr. Haroon Akram Lodhi, chair of the Department of International Development Studies at Trent University. “Students could see, in a fun and engaging way, that seemingly intractable problems do have solutions – and that Canadians can make a difference in this country and the world.”
The exhibit presented students with large global challenges, such as food security and nutrition, but broke them down into a variety of approachable solutions, featuring stories from across the globe. There was also a focus on what Canadians are doing to make a difference in global development.
Students were invited to participate and engage with the highly interactive exhibit. Activities included taking a quiz to determine what type of global citizen they are, with information on how they could get involved further. Students were encouraged to share, give answers to global challenges, and join the conversation on global development.
