Trent Honours 54 Academic All-Canadians at Special Ceremony November 20
Varsity Athletes Recognized for Achieving Academic Excellence; 20 Students Honoured as Multiple Year Recipients
At a special ceremony held on November 20, Trent University recognized fifty-four student athletes as Academic All-Canadians (AAC).
The annual awards event, which is hosted by Trent’s Department of Athletics and Recreation, honours students who participate in varsity sports and achieve an academic average of 80 per cent or higher. Of the 2008 recipients, 20 students are multiple-year AAC winners, six of whom were honoured for the fourth time.
“At Trent, we are proud of our students who make an impact on the field, in the gym, or on the water as well as in the classroom,” said Trent President Bonnie Patterson. “Having such a high number of Academic All Canadians each year at Trent shows how, as a University, we strive to encourage balance and excellence in all of our students.”
Bill Byrick, director of Athletics at Trent echoed President Patterson’s remarks by saying, "Once again we are delighted with the academic success of our student athletes. It is a very challenging task for athletes to balance a demanding practice and game schedule with classes, assignments and exams. But our athletes do it well and with ease. These students are indeed exceptional individuals.”
Trent has 300 varsity athletes and 17 varsity teams that compete within the Canadian Interuniversity Sport organization, Ontario University Athletics and the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association.
