Peer Mentoring Program at Trent
In the past two years, the Trent Peer Mentoring Program (PMP) has experienced unprecedented growth, helping hundreds of students. In the 2006-07 academic year, the program made an astounding 170 matches between mentors — upper year students with experience — and “mentees” — students looking for guidance in specific courses.
This year, the Peer Mentoring program hopes to build on that success.
Initial response to early requests for volunteers has indicated that 2007-08 will be another great year. As the second week of classes comes to a close, the program has approved mentors in first-year classes in 20 disciplines, ranging from Physics to Cultural Studies and Spanish to Administration. Mentors also represent a wide range of second- and third-year classes. To date, the program has been able to match or direct about 90 per cent of this year’s inquiries.
Trent's Peer Mentoring Program is available to all undergraduate students at Trent, free of charge. The PMP is a division of the Academic Skills Centre and is a great way to get involved in the academic community. It's a place where students who need help can get it, and where students who have help and time to spare can give it. Mentors are students with successful academic track records; they help other students who are looking for a better understanding of course concepts.
We invite all students to utilise our service – we offer a great opportunity for experienced students to volunteer and extend a helping hand to students who may be struggling with a specific course.
