Trent Summer Sports Camp Making a World of Difference to Local Community
TSSC 2009 Runs from July 6 to August 28 at Trent University
Leadership training, canoeing, and dancing are just a few of the activities campers get to participate in during their time at the Trent Summer Sports Camp (TSSC). Led by specially trained staff and student leaders, campers are welcomed into a supportive day camp experience, which keeps the focus on having fun while staying healthy through a variety of sport and active living activities.
In addition to the daily activities and sports, the camp offers overnight trips, specialty programs and theme days. Campers are continually engaged through many different initiatives that keep their interests peaked throughout their two-week-long session with the TSSC.
“Any other camp we’ve tried just pales in comparison,” said TSSC parent Jhane Brasier at the end of the first session barbeque. Ms. Brasier has sent her daughter, Tori, to Trent for the past three years and enjoys the fact that the camp has an overall energy that you can see in the great staff and specialty programs, like dance, which her daughter particularly enjoys.
For those campers who are returning for another year, the TSSC offers opportunities for participants to grow year after year with the great friends and familiar faces they meet during their time there. Progressive awards are even given out to campers as they complete specific milestones such as first session completed, five years of participation, and ten years of participation.
Julianna Stonehouse, TSSC coordinator, is ecstatic about the success of the camp. “I think that the community connection that the camp makes with the greater Peterborough community is very important to not only the camp, but to Trent as a whole,” she said. “Having Trent supported by the community allows for key relationships to be established that help enrich the overall experience that Trent offers.”
The TSSC has been run by the Athletics & Recreation Department at Trent University for the past 14 years and has a long reputation of being an outstanding summer program for children. The camp is a thriving piece of community programming that benefits not only the campers, but also the entire Peterborough region as one of the only summer camps offered in the North end of the city.
